The Aizu team and Food Culture (Hojo) team will show their works at the Tokyo Designers Week 2013, School Exhibition, which will begin on the 26th of this month. As an exploration to seek, through art and design, new lifestyles and values after the earthquake, a “Yagura tower” and “Kamado cooking stove” will be shown by the respective teams. * On Nov. 3, Sunday, students from each team will give a presentation in the dome at the TDW. The presentation time is from 9:00 till 12:30, but the exact time of the Tsukuba University teams’ turn is undetermined.

Crappe
The Kitajo team organized Crappe as a part of the Kitajo Fall Market held on November 3rd and 4th.
Kitajo prospered during the Edo era as a temple city for the worship of the Tsukuba Mountains; historic streets bordered by old storehouses can still be found. The tornado hit just at the moment when locals were working on projects to revitalize the area by converting the storehouses into concert halls or reunion spaces.
This time around, in an effort to spread the good word about Kitajo and increase its number of visitors, the team organized Crappe — an event during which Kitajo-style rice balls, a regional specialty, were served to attendees.
Despite tarpaulins draped over structures, broken signage and other evidence of devastation that remained, many people came to the Fall Market and seemed to enjoy the rice balls.

Kiki-Kome
Crappe, an occasion during which rice balls will be served at the Hojo Fall Market in the district of Hojo (Tsukuba city), will take place this weekend.
In order to promote this event, we arranged an additional activity called “Kiki-Kome” at Tsukuba University; after obtaining rice from the supermarket, old rice from Hojo and freshly harvested rice from Hojo, we made a variety of rice balls and surveyed people on campus about which one had the best taste.

Research on Hojo, Tsukuba City
The team in charge of the Hojo area began their fieldwork.
Their unit discussed architecture and design with Pr. Ando, who has been working on construction projects in Hojo. They also interviewed local representatives about the history of Hojo and the tornado’s impact.
After examining warehouses that were damaged by the earthquake and tornado the group was able to analyze the actions taken in the aftermath and hear about how they plan on continuing their efforts.
Thanks to this investigation the researchers were made aware of the true hopes and fears of disaster victims. Based on these experiences the Hojo team will review options regarding proper disaster response procedures in the affected areas. (Kataoka)
